Radley College is one of England's finest all-boys boarding schools — intimate, traditional and highly regarded by those who know it well. Set on 800 acres near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, it provides a superb full-boarding education for boys aged 13–18, with exceptional results and a quietly distinctive culture. Entry is via the ISEB Pre-Test and Common Entrance, with registration required several years in advance.
About Radley College
Radley College is located at Abingdon, Oxfordshire, OX14 — accessible from Oxford (about 10 minutes), and reasonably accessible from London (an hour by car via the M40). The school educates around 720 boys, all of whom board full-time. There are no day pupils and no weekly boarding; Radley is fully committed to the total boarding model.
Radley is consistently one of the top boys' boarding schools in the country by academic results, with substantial Oxbridge entry each year and strong representation at the country's leading universities. It also has a remarkable record in sport — rowing in particular, where it produces national and international competitors — and in music, art and drama.
The entry process
- Registration very early — Radley is notably oversubscribed and strongly advises registration as early as possible — ideally within a year or two of birth in some cases, and certainly by Year 3 or 4 for Year 9 entry. Families should contact the school and ask about current waiting list position when they first consider Radley.
- ISEB Common Pre-Test — candidates sit the ISEB online Pre-Test (English, Maths, VR, NVR). Radley uses results to assess academic potential.
- Radley's own assessment — shortlisted boys visit Radley for academic assessment papers and interviews with their potential Social (house) tutor. The assessment is designed to be welcoming but is genuinely rigorous.
- Conditional offer — subject to Common Entrance in Year 8.
- Common Entrance in Year 8 — CE across major subjects. Radley's conditional pass mark is typically around 65–70%, which is higher than many peer schools.
Common Entrance at Radley
CE for Radley covers: English, Mathematics, Sciences, French, History, Geography, Religious Studies and Latin (typically expected rather than just recommended). Radley's higher CE pass mark means that preparation in Years 7 and 8 must be systematic and thorough — particularly in Latin and the Sciences, which can catch boys out.
Radley's Social system
Radley uses the term 'Social' rather than 'House' — a deliberate distinction that reflects the school's emphasis on community and pastoral care. Each boy belongs to one of eight Socials, each with its own tutor who is responsible for pastoral care and academic oversight. The Social tutor interview is an important part of the assessment process.
Scholarships
Radley offers academic, music, art and sports scholarships, as well as an All-Rounder award. Academic scholars sit additional harder papers at the time of CE in Year 8. The college also has a means-tested bursary programme.
Why Radley?
Radley is distinctive among top boarding schools for the combination of academic rigour, exceptional sport (especially rowing), a genuine residential community feel, and a campus that is, quite simply, beautiful. Boys who thrive at Radley are typically those who embrace the full boarding lifestyle, enjoy sport and are academically serious but also broadly engaged.
When to start preparation
- Year 4–5: academic foundations; ensure Latin is underway; build co-curricular interests, especially sport if rowing or other major Radley sports are relevant.
- Year 6–7: ISEB Pre-Test preparation, and preparation for Radley's own assessment papers and Social tutor interview.
- Year 7–8: CE subject preparation, paying particular attention to Latin, Sciences and Maths — the subjects where boys are most likely to fall below Radley's higher pass mark.
Finding a tutor for Radley preparation
Given Radley's slightly higher CE pass mark, thorough CE preparation in Years 7 and 8 is particularly important. Tutors for Latin, Mathematics, Sciences and English are the most commonly needed. Pre-Test preparation in Years 5–7 should cover all four ISEB components.
